ABBY

by Mariane Holbrook

Her green eye and blue eye will set her apart,
My first little grandchild, heart of my heart.

I wonder what kindness on earth I have done
To warrant this greatest gift under the sun.

The first time I saw her I broke down and cried,
My full heart was bursting with joy and with pride.

My son stood beside me and pointed her out;
She looked like her daddy, there wasn’t a doubt.

Her mommy was tired from the stress of her birth
But soon gave us Abby, the dearest on earth.

And now four years later, this shy little sprite
Is trying to read and has learned how to write.

She’s growing up quickly, this beautiful child,
This one on whom God and the angels have smiled.

Each day that I live I repeat the same prayer,
“Dear Lord, keep my Abby in Your tender care.”
